D700 & Tamron 28-300VC, first impressions | |||
This morning while driving back from
a Bayreuth visit I went to
Audiophil in
Aachen (Germany) to try out a D700. Back in nov 29th I bought my D3 in that
company: good prices, extremely friendly people and great service after sales, and,... they have an unbelievable stock of Nikon gear...
The NikonD700 seems to deliver exactly
the same IQ as what D3 does, something nobody will be amazed about.... The
attractive characteristics for myself are the much smaller and lighter body and
the built in flash, which avoids the use of an accessory in commander mode and I
have a permanent flash for "in case"... The built-in flash is also
extremely interesting for my favourite kind of photography, macro...
I had the opportunity to try the Tamron 28-300 VC on the D700 and eventhough I was sceptical before I mounted this combo, I left the shop with the lens. I was surprised about the AF accuracy and speed(taking into consideration that this is a screw driven lens), the overall IQ, the colour rendering and especially about Tamron's vibraction reduction system. I also find that this lens shows very little distortion.
Of course this "slow" lens takes advantage of
the D3/D700's exceptional high
iso performance, as you can see many of the underneath shots have been taken @
iso 6400. No PP was applied, only resized for web publication...
I also mounted the 28-300VC on a S5pro body, but there the AF performance was
rather disappointing, totally different as when mounted on the D700...
The greatest attraction of this combo is the focal range, approx the same as what the D200 and 18-200VR used to give me, and I liked it very much...
The tamron 28-300 VC won't replace any of my current lenses, but it will serve me well as allround travelling lens.
The shop owner allowed me to take some pictures outside with the D700 & the tamron 28-300VC...

Here I was amazed about the accuracy this lens snapped focus eventhough I
was standing outside in sunny conditions and from that point it was looking
really dark inside the shop. I used spot metering for this picture. |
